DECANTING – a philosophy!

Wine connoisseurs divided

The ceremony. The celebration.

Wine connoisseurs, whether professionals or wine lovers, are divided over the process of decantation. When is wine best decanted and which wines benefit from it – or is this simply a matter of taste?

Many wine lovers decant their wines to allow them to breathe, that is, expose them to oxygen so that the aromas can develop optimally.

But generally wines are still decanted too rarely – and if they are, then only red wines. Originally only mature red wines were decanted in order to separate any sediments and tartrate crystals, the so-called wine diamonds, from the wine. Today, however, we drink red wines too soon. The decanting process aerates them so that they become smoother and rounder and delight our taste buds. But white wines, and even champagne, can also benefit from decanting.

Decanting older, mature wines, although correct, as too much air is not good for mature wines. Through wide exposure to oxygen, they gain aroma quickly and immediately appear soft and not very closed. After a short while, however, the oxidative note begins to diffuse the aroma and the wine loses character.

Which wines should be decanted?

Young red wines, white wines and champagne. But properly matured red wines with caution. White wines react well to decantation and can benefit from it more greatly than is generally assumed. Red wines, if you want to get rid of deposits. And mature red wines (decanted or not) should be consumed quickly. Young, non-aged red wines taste smoother and more mature when exposed to air.

Simple decanters or carafes are suitable for aged red wines, while young wines benefit from Riedel’s Snake decanters with their double decanting function.

Decanting – above all an experience! With our Snake decanters, pouring wine becomes part of the enjoyment!

At Riedel, we believe that our Snake decanters are the perfect “tool” for the enjoyment of wine for all wine lovers. Riedel’s Snake decanters – Mamba, Eve and Evechen – are handmade and feature a double aeration function, which allows for the optimal, intensive aeration and perfect portioning of wine. They combine spectacular design with excellent functionality.

Mamba – an extravagant, seductive and efficient decanter

Mamba – is reminiscent of the elegant black mamba, the fastest snake in the world, whose energy and vigour inspired this decanter’s design. Seductive and efficient!  When the wine is poured, it flows through several chambers. Thus it is double decanted and intensively aerated –  an effect that can only be achieved with a traditional decanter after several hours. The long neck, which is ideal for pouring, has an additional vitalising effect when wine is served. The ceremony is accompanied by a sonorous glugging sound – audible evidence not only of perfect aeration, but also of the wine’s vitality.

Eve – seductive design and patented functionality by Riedel

Eve, an extravagant carafe with a striking design: It is a reference to Eve’s temptation in the Garden of Eden.

But this handmade decanter is more than pleasing to the eye. Its double aeration function allows for wine to be perfectly aerated and portioned, thus ensuring ideal enjoyment of aged and young wines alike. Serving becomes a true experience!

Once moved around its own axis, the wine flows – accompanied by an audible glugging sound – through the first chamber and is thereby optimally aerated, before the ideal quantity of wine reaches the second chamber. This one-of-a-kind combination of aeration and portion control – developed by Maximilian J. Riedel – also convinced the patent commission. The Eve decanter received worldwide patent protection for this functionality in May 2009. Eve is an art object that gives the greatest pleasure.

Small, neat and functional – this is the Evechen decanter – seduction in a handy size

The Evechen decanter is a smaller, but no less enticing version of the successful Eve decanter – and just as functional. Handmade in Tyrol, just like Eve, it impresses with its handy size. Its lower height makes it easy to stow away. Its capacity is 1370 cc, which proves ideal for white wines too.
