A REBELLION AGAINST THE ESTABLISHMENT SHATTERS THE CLASSIC IDEA OF GLASS
Celebrating 10 years in 2017, Nachtmann NEXTGEN looked to a world capital of creativity for its next collaborative project; one which continuously writes success stories from art to fashion, design to theatre. London has long been known for its ability to challenge the status quo and bring an irreverent, quirky touch to innovation. This pulsing city inspired the young generation of upcoming designers from Central Saint Martins, the partner of this year's new, very extroverted NEXTGEN designs.
Ten students from the world famous college were invited to partake in the project, which spanned London and Neustadt from December 2015 to June 2016. During the competition period, they gained insights into the production, design development and brand philosophy of Nachtmann, in order to make innovative designs tailored to the values of the brand.
Two winners were selected out of the resulting designs, including the cheekily abrasive PUNK by Anke Buchmann. The design, which is unlike anything seen before in glass, coincides with the 40th anniversary of Punk culture.
"In keeping with the Punk movement, I wanted to rebel and break with the norm,” Anke explains. “I began to sketch some typical surfaces and patterns of punk, such as rivets and grids. Moving on from these literal translations of key Punk visuals, I progressed to a broader interpretation of the movement, letting the attitude shape the form. At the same time, I carefully researched Nachtmann’s approach to texture and patterns so I could merge this with the Punk style."
The series dusts off the concept of traditional crystal homewares and marks its continued evolution into a modern and functional product. "Designing a set of barware featuring areas that break out from the normal shape of the vessel, I broke out of the ordinary. My punk attitude shattered the classic idea of crystal, and marks a juxtaposition between luxury and Punk," emphasizes Buchmann.
Richard Voit, CEO of Nachtmann, believes these unique and extremely individual designs are what have made the NEXTGEN series Nachtmann’s most successful product category. "With every NEXTGEN design competition, we are delighted to be able to implement innovative and creative designs inspired by international influences of young designers.”
The PUNK collection features whisky tumblers, long drink tumblers, martini glasses, and a whisky set consisting of a decanter and two tumblers, as well as colour variations of the tumblers in gunmetal, jet black, copper and ruby.

In 2016, Nachtmann NEXTGEN collaborated with London’s famous design school, Central Saint Martins, formed following the merger of Saint Martin’s School of Art and the Central School of Art and Design in 1989. Using the city’s diversity and hunger for change as drivers of creativity, its alumni include designers Alexander McQueen, Stella McCartney, John Galliano, and Zac Posen, artist Laure Prouvost, and theatre designer Maria Björnson.
