The latest series from Nachtmann NEXTGEN is listed alongside Australia’s best designs for 2017.
LISTED ALONGSIDE AUSTRALIA'S BEST DESIGNS FOR 2017
Good Design Australia has announced their 2017 Awards after an extensive evaluation process involving more than 35 Australian and international design experts. PUNK by Nachtmann was awarded a Good Design Selection honour, under the Product Design category for Homewares, Fashion and Object. It was one of only 244 entries to receive the accolade this year.
On awarding the Good Design Selection for PUNK by Nachtmann, the Jury commented: “Punk is a bold design that breaks the conventional design norms for this product sector. The design is highly resolved and functional and works well as a range. The design aesthetic complements the sophistication and elegance of the brand and elevates this category.”
Australia’s Good Design Awards date back to the 1950s and have an enviable record of unearthing globally recognised talent and products. “The Australian Good Design Awards attracted innovative entries from all corners of the world and the standard of submissions this year has really been incredible,” said Dr Brandon Gien, CEO of Good Design Australia and Chair of the Good Design Awards program. “This is one of the few design award programs in the world where design and innovation are celebrated so broadly.”

PUNK by Nachtmann can be viewed at the 2017 Good Design Showcase, featuring all winners of this year’s Awards, at the Sydney Overseas Passenger Terminal. The Showcase coincides with Vivid Sydney, the world’s largest festival of light, music and ideas, and is open to the public over the June long weekend.
The PUNK collection features whisky tumblers, long drink tumblers, martini glasses, and a whiskey set consisting of a decanter and two tumblers, as well as colour variations of the tumblers in gunmetal, jet black, copper and ruby.
In 2017, Nachtmann invited ten students from London’s famous Central Saint Martins to partake in their NEXTGEN design competition. Following insights into the production, design development and brand philosophy of Nachtmann, two winners were selected including the cheekily abrasive PUNK by Anke Buchmann.
The design, which is unlike anything seen before in glass, coincides with the 40th anniversary of Punk culture. "In keeping with the Punk movement, I wanted to rebel and break with the norm,” Anke explains.
The series dusts off the concept of traditional crystal homewares and marks its continued evolution into a modern and functional product. "Designing a set of barware featuring areas that break out from the normal shape of the vessel, I shattered the classic idea of crystal," says Anke.
