The Ao Yun glass by RIEDEL

the best tasting experience of the Grand Cru of the Himalayas

In July 2018, Maxence Dulou, Ao Yun’s Estate Director travelled to Austria to meet Maximilian and Georg Riedel. Together, they spent hours studying and testing dozens of glasses. This workshop inspired a selection of glasses, to be tested extensively in the following months.

The Glass

In July 2018, Maxence Dulou, Ao Yun’s Estate Director travelled to Austria to meet Maximilian and Georg Riedel. Together, they spent hours studying and testing dozens of glasses. This workshop inspired a selection of glasses, to be tested extensively in the following months.

One glass stood out during the various tastings, consistently voted the favorite. Many adjustments were made to achieve the perfect sensation: The Ao Yun glass was created.

Its only purpose: offer the best organoleptic enjoyment of Ao Yun, the first Grand Cru of the Himalayas.

The sharp cut and narrow diameter of the edge of the Ao Yun glass allows for a more precise tasting experience and enhances the aromas on the nose and palate.

"Tasting Ao Yun in its bespoke glass highlights the balance of fruit and intensity, as well as the silky texture and rounded tannins of this wine" said Maxence Dulou. "The larger bowl of the glass was specifically designed to better oxygenate the wine. Since Ao Yun is vinified at altitude with 25% less oxygen, it requires more contact with the air prior to tasting", Maxence Dulou added.

For Maxence Dulou, Ao Yun is a living adventure, “It is rare and extraordinary to be able to taste the first vintages of a new terroir. These wines incarnate the journey, adventure and perseverance behind Ao Yun – a story that has only just begun.”

This glass was made optimal for Ao Yun, but its model inspired then a dedicated collection of glasses by RIEDEL, named RIEDEL Winewings.

Ao Yun is the result of French winemaking expertise combined with local know how.

A long local tradition of peaceful, sustainable coexistence between man & nature is continued

Its wines express the harmony, elegance and complexity of the terroir’s characteristic: concentration with freshness and soft, dense tannins with a long, salty mineral finish.

About Ao Yun

Ao Yun is the first Grand Cru of the Himalayas, born from a dream of making a singular Chinese wine; a complex, elegant wine with beautiful aging potential.

In 2008, Respected Australian oenologist and adventurer Dr. Tony Jordan is tasked with finding the perfect terroir. The research process is long and arduous.

After four years of research to identify the best region, at the end of precariously winding roads high up in northern Yunnan, lies an unexpected discovery:

In a mountainous area, Ao Yun’s vineyards reach heights of 2,200 to 2,600 m above sea level, literally suspended between sky and earth.

Located on both banks of the Mekong River, Ao Yun is at the center of the Three Parallel Rivers region, a Unesco Protected Area. This diversity of terroirs increases the complexity of Ao Yun’s final blend.

In 2012, enthralled by the wonder of what could be hidden within this remote part of the world, Maxence Dulou, a winemaker from Bordeaux, fulfilled his dream of discovering a new terroir and joined the Ao Yun adventure. The thick wandering clouds, characteristic of the area, are an echo of Ao Yun’s name, which translates to roaming above the clouds.
