Both RIEDEL's handmade and machine-made decanters are produced in fine, lead-free crystal glass.

Each handmade item is individually crafted by our master glassmakers, using original blown glass techniques dating back 2000 years and first used by the Romans. The expertise of our master glassmakers guarantees that the quality of each product meets the RIEDEL brand's high standards.

Due to the nature of hand-crafting, small tolerances in the size and weight of each handmade product, tiny bubbles, imperfections, or slight surface variations are an acceptable part of the process.

Why we decant

Decant older wines to separate and remove sediment.


Traditionally, only mature wines were decanted in order to separate sediment from the wine. A wine 10 years or older is typically considered as matured.

To remove the sediment from an old wine, slowly pour the wine into the decanter without allowing any sediment to leave the bottle. Allow the wine to flow smoothly down the walls of the decanter, aerating gently.

Decant younger wines to aerate and open up aromas and flavours, revealing more complexity.


Decanting allows young wines (up to 10 years) to show more expression, as the aeration speeds up the ageing process to delight our taste buds. 

Carbon dioxide is the main preservation element in wine, which is integrated during the first (alcoholic) fermentation. Exposure to oxygen burns off carbon dioxide, effectively maturing the wine and allowing the bouquet to develop faster. Decanted red wine expresses more fruit on the palate, and integrates and smooths out tannins.

It is recommended you decant two hours before consumption. Turn the bottle upside down and let it vigorously splash into the decanter, ideally producing a frothy head.
