Feuerzangenbowle

Fire Tongs Punch

Ingredients for 8 drinks:

  • 1 untreated orange
  • 1 untreated lemon
  • 2 l / 70.4 oz. red wine
  • 500 ml / 16.9 oz. orange juice
  • 1 cinnamon stick
  • 6 cloves
  • 4 star anise
  • 350 ml / 11.8 oz. rum
  • 1 sugar cone or 8 small sugar cones

Preparation:

For the Fire Tongs Punch or “Feuerzangenbowl” (in German) rinse the orange and the lemon with hot water. Slice half of the orange in slices, zest the lemon and squeeze the rest of the fruits in a pot. Add the red wine and all the spice to the pot and heat it slowly. Make sure it does not start to boil.

Remove the pot from the heat and place it on a heat source (a réchaud or from a Fondue set). Then place the sugar cone into a metal holder (“Feuerzange” in German) and soak the cone with rum and light it.  Afterwards put some rum in a ladle and carefully light it on. Pour the burning rum over the sugar cone.  Add the rest of the rum in the ladle and repeat it.

While waiting for the sugar cone to melt entirely, add the orange or lemon slices. Before serving stir well and you are ready.

If you want to have an eyecatcher, use instead of one sugar cone, small ones for every glass. Instead of pouring rum over the sugar cone, let the sugar cone soak for a few seconds in the rum and then place it on the RIEDEL Tumbler Collection Shadows glas and light it on.
