This red grape variety is of Spanish origin from the province of Aragon but is planted around the globe and most commonly found in French wine. These thick-skinned grapes ripen late and require a warm climate. They can offer acidity, intense colour and flashy tannins to southern French blends, and Carignan vines over 50 years old can produced incredibly concentrated wines that are full of character.
