Sommelier of the Month (UK): Julia Sewell

Our Sommelier of the Month for May 2019 is Julia Sewell from Hide. Julia has very kindly answered a selection of questions which are below along with her response.

How did you get into the wine industry?

Despite growing up in a premium Australian wine-growing area, I did not encounter wine until after I’d already moved to the city and began working in a restaurant. Naturally, I was drawn in by the opportunity to spend a lifetime studying something about which I would never really know anything.

Why do you enjoy using Riedel glassware within your restaurant?

I find that in general guests recognise the brand and the quality, so it always brings a pleasant start to their wine experience. The decanters especially come up as a talking point, and conveniently they are both beautiful and easy to use.

What reaction do you get from customers when you serve their wines in different varietal specific glasses?

It’s often a conversation starter; guests love to ask ‘why?’

With the right opportunity, it’s great to give them the same wine in different glasses and see how they notice the changes in flavour and structure.

What’s been your greatest wine experience?

Drinking wine made by Egon Muller, at the winery, with the winemaker.

What’s been the funniest wine moment in your career?

A colleague of mine opened a bottle of Champagne that was slightly too warm, without the requisite care taken. The cork ricocheted off the opposite wall and half the champagne erupted out of the bottle – all over me.

What’s been your biggest wine faux pas?

I wasn’t paying attention whilst pouring wine from the Eve decanter. 125ml of Cirsion went on the guest’s cheese plate instead of in their glass… Thankfully the guest told me they were planning to have the two together anyway, and that I’d just sped up the process for them!
