The Sphere series was developed in 2014 as part of the NACHTMANN NEXTGEN Project, a global competition for young design students to create a range of products for the NACHTMANN brand. Sphere designer Roman Kvita came from the Academy of Arts, Architecture & Design in Prague. Founded in 1885, the Academy was an ideal partner for the NEXTGEN Project as it encourages its students to thrive with enthusiasm for innovation.

In Roman's words, "My aim was to connect the tradition and quality of hand-made glass with the precision and possibilities of pressed glass. I was influenced by legendary Czech glass designers who took a sculptural approach to their craft, like Frantisek Vizner, Rudolf Jurnikl, Jirí Zejmon, and Jirí Brabec. I experimented with spheres and saw how spherical convex shapes play with light to make striking refractions."
